Prepare for an evening of mind-blowing adventures filled with awe, wonder, mystery, terror, and suspense. Sixteen science fiction, fantasy, and horror writers will read their original short stories, each five minutes or less in length, at the Fantasy and Science Fiction Slam, July 26 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Manchester, New Hampshire, Barnes & Noble. All authors are graduates of the Odyssey Writing Workshop, a six-week summer program for writers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror held at Saint Anselm College in Manchester. Top authors, editors, and agents have served as guest lecturers at the workshop, including George R. R. Martin, Robert J. Sawyer, Terry Brooks, Harlan Ellison, Holly Black, and Dan Simmons. Fifty-nine percent of graduates go on to professional publication. Readers at this year’s slam include talented writers from all across the US: Gerald Warfield, winner of the Writers of the Future contest; Larry Hodges, published author of over 100 stories and the novels Sorcerers in Space and Campaign 2100: Game of Scorpions; Travis Heermann, an award-winning screenwriter and author of the Ronin Trilogy; Barbara A. Barnett, who has published over 50 short stories in magazines such as Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show, and Daily Science Fiction; and many others. The Odyssey Writing Workshops Charitable Trust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Jeanne Cavelos, director and creator of Odyssey, will host the evening. A former senior editor at Bantam Doubleday Dell and winner of the World Fantasy Award, she is the author of seven books, including the bestselling The Passing of the Techno-Mages trilogy and The Science of Star Wars.
