DURHAM — The RiverWoods Group, Northern New England’s largest family of nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), is proud to announce a major expansion of its RiverWoods Durham campus. Located on Stone Quarry Drive in Durham, NH, the expansion will include 55 new independent living homes across two beautifully designed buildings, along with a stand-alone community center offering inviting resident common spaces, dining services, and a wide range of social and recreational opportunities.

“This expansion is about more than adding homes, it’s about deepening our promise to provide community, connection, and peace of mind for older adults in New Hampshire," said Justine Vogel, CEO of the RiverWoods Group. "The town of Durham has been an incredible partner from the very beginning, and together we’re building on a shared commitment to create a community where people can live fully and contribute meaningfully at every stage of life.”

The Durham Planning Board granted conditional approval for the project on Nov. 12, 2025, following a collaborative planning process between The RiverWoods Group and the Town of Durham. Fittingly, that date also marks six years since RiverWoods Durham first opened its doors to residents. Upon final planning board approval, construction on the expansion is expected to begin in Summer 2026, with the first residents anticipated to move in by late 2027.

Developed in close cooperation with the Town of Durham, this new phase will be adjacent to the original RiverWoods Durham buildings, which opened ahead of schedule in late 2019 and sold out in just 29 days setting a national record for speed of sales.

RiverWoods Durham continues to embody the RiverWoods mission of providing lifetime security, independence, and community. With panoramic views, open floor plans, and a strong sense of neighborly connection, the expansion reflects the same thoughtful planning and commitment to excellence that made the original campus a resounding success.

“Our residents see the upcoming expansion as a wonderful addition to the community. They’re looking forward to welcoming new neighbors and enjoying the enhanced amenities that will further enrich the vibrant lifestyle at RiverWoods Durham,” remarked Natalee Belanger, executive director of RiverWoods Durham.

Given the overwhelming response to the original development, RiverWoods Durham has already received similar enthusiasm for the new homes from future residents. To meet demand, a priority list will be established, offering current RiverWoods residents and future reidents the first opportunity to select their residence in the new expansion.
