Name: Global Tipping Points: The Challenges of Populism in Italy and France
Date: February 6, 2020
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM EST
Event Description:

As recent American foreign policy choices fuel mistrust between its European partners, the European Union is facing the existential question of becoming a stronger actor on the global scene. At the same time, the EU is also facing domestic challenges, largely due to the rise of right-wing and left-wing populism in the bloc's largest member nations, urging a broader discussion on the future of the EU. The Yellow Vests in France and the Five Star Movement in Italy are two interesting examples of the impact on domestic and foreign policy that longstanding economic distress and overall disenchantment towards establishment powers are having. Join the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire in hearing from Brookings Institution Visiting Fellow, Dr. Giovanna De Maio, to hear about these pressing populist challenges facing two of the United States's strongest European allies.
