Celebrate Handmade’ Week & Empty Bowls Workshop at Studio 550 Art Center

Play with clay for a good cause (and get some holiday shopping done, too!)

Manchester, NH- The week of November 18-23, 2019 Studio 550 Art Center is hosting a week of community events, promotions, and discounts to celebrate our love of handmade as a part of everyday life. There will be a fun opportunity to give back to the community and also receive specials and prizes. This is in lieu of Small Business Saturday, when the studio will be closed.

Happenings for the week include:

November 18-23rd: Celebrate Handmade Week, during any open hours

  • Play a simple game to win discounts in the handmade gift shop or win prizes

  • Browse and purchase handmade items from over 45 different artists/makers. There is pottery, stained glass, hand carved spoons, knit hats, stickers, prints, plants, DIY Gift Package Stations, and more.

  • Gift Card Upgrade – Spend $75 or more in gift cards and receive either a free $5 gift card for yourself or a free upgrade to a clay tablet gift card

  • Gift Shop raffle – Spend $75 or more in the gift shop and be entered into a raffle to win a free date night for two in the pottery studio or a DIY Succulent Plant Arrangement workshop for two. Spend $150 or more and be entered twice!

  • "Student & Staff Seconds Pottery Sale" (which means pottery at a crazy discounted price because of small blemishes or because the maker just doesn’t like something about it anymore) and the $1 pottery sale to benefit the "Clay for Kids" fund.

November 19th, 12-1PM, Ribbon Cutting for the New Handmade Gift Shop

  • Meet the staff who manage Studio 550 & the Handmade Gift Shop

  • Pottery demonstrations

  • All the above promotions and games

  • Light refreshments

November 23rd, 2-6PM Community Bowl-Making Party to benefit New Horizons:

The “Celebrate Handmade” week wraps up with a community bowl-making blast, where members of the community and local potters come together to make as many quality bowls as possible in a few hours. All bowls are for the New Horizons Empty Bowls fundraiser that will be held on March 8, 2020.

Any interested community members are invited to sculpt bowls by coil into bowl-forms or decorate bowls pre-made by staff (while supplies last). Beginners, kids, adults, and groups are all welcome! Our teachers will show you what to do.

Participants don’t have to stay the full four hours! It is drop in and will likely only be about 30-40 minutes for anyone sculpting or decorating a bowl (and not using the wheel). However, RSVPs are helpful so our teachers can be as prepared as possible. Book a time slot here: https://550arts.as.me/makebowls

THE COST: It is FREE to participate. Clay, tools, and basic instruction for the sculptors will be provided. However, donations are always welcome to help offset the cost of materials and firing.

THE CHALLENGE: You can come to make just one bowl. You can also come to make more than one. If you make 10 or more quality and food safe soup bowls during the event, you will be entered into a drawing for a Studio 550 Gift Card.
