Name: The Gift of Failure
Date: January 30, 2017
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EST
Event Description:

LEARN HOW OVERPARENTING CAN UNDERMINE YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION

Jessica Lahey, author of The Gift of Failure, will present at The Derryfield School on Monday, January 30 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Lyceum as part of the E. Charles Sanborn Visiting Fellow Program.

Lahey’s presentation will focus on the value of parenting for intrinsic motivation by fostering autonomy, competence, and connection and by taking advantage of personal relevance, desirable difficulties, and formative assessments in learning.

The Gift of Failure explores the essential school years when parents must learn to allow their children to experience disappointment, frustration, and failure so they may become successful and resilient adults.

Lahey reminds us that over-parenting or helicopter-parenting can destroy a child’s confidence and ultimately undermine their education. Beyond academic skills, children must develop life skills including responsibility, organization, and manners to become resilient and successful lifelong learners and contributing members of a community.

The Gift of Failure provides specific strategies and advice regarding homework, report cards, athletics, and social interactions. Lahey provides a plan to help parents learn to embrace their children’s successes—and failures.

Book purchase and signing will be available following the presentation.

This event is free and open to the public. The Derryfield School is located on 2108 River Road in Manchester, NH, with easy access to Routes 93 and 293.
